Blood transfusions are one of the most commonly performed medical procedures but carry risks when performed incorrectly. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed weaknesses in the blood supply chain that created an opportunity for these risks and errors to increase.
Staff shortages exacerbated by the pandemic place stress on an already complex blood transfusion process. While instability in the blood supply chain, “just in case” ordering and unavailable products can lead to inefficiencies and potential waste. There is much room for improvement.
Point-of-care blood management systems have been shown to result in significant improvements in all aspects of the transfusion process. Learn how the implementation of this system helped a US hospital dramatically redesign how they distribute blood products to patients and better utilize resources.
